PCI-SIG announced the availability of the PCI Express Base 2.0 specification on 15 January 2007.[2] PCIe 2.0 doubles the bus standard's bandwidth from 2.5 Gbit/s to 5 Gbit/s, meaning a x32 connector can transfer data at up to 16 GB/s in each direction. PCIe 2.0 is still compatible with PCIe 1.1, so older cards will still be able to work in machines with this new version.

The PCI-SIG also said PCIe 2.0 also features improvements to the point-to-point data transfer protocol and its software architecture.[3]

In June 2007 Intel released the specification of the P35 chipset which does NOT support PCIe 2.0 only PCIe 1.1 [4]. Some people may be confused by the P35 block diagram [5] which states the Intel P35 has a PCIe x16 graphics link (8 GB/s) and 6 PCIe x1 links (500 MB/s each), for simple verification one can view the P965 block diagram which shows the same number of lanes and bandwidth but was released before PCIe 2.0 was finalised. Intel's first PCIe 2.0 capable chipset will be the X38 and will be released in Q3 2007[citation needed]. starts supporting PCIe 2.0 from its RD700 chipset series. has revealed that the MCP72 will be their first PCIe 2.0 equipped chipset

Low power by design

GDDR4 has been developed with low power requirements in mind from the start. If we look at GDDR3 vs GDDR4 we find:

The VDD is lower on GDDR4 than on GDDR3.

The nominal voltage for GDDR4 is 1.5V. 1.9V is used for gaming or overclocking. This gives a 30% save compared to GDDR3.

Fixed data burst length of 8.

This lowers the frequency by 2x compared to GDDR3, significantly reduces the power and thus allows for higher clock frequencies.

Joe Macri showed us some of the ways they managed to do all this and while I wont pretend I understand everything

you might find this interesting.

DBI Data Bus inversions

This lowers power consumption and increases the speed by reducing VDD-noise.

How it works? Well, by trying to eliminate the Logic 0s as much as possible as they are the only ones that use power

Lower input Capacitance

GDDR4 has lower input capacitance than GDDR3 meaning lower power and more speed

Double Pumped Address Bus

GDDR4 uses ½ the pins for address than GDDR3

* Slight reduction in Power

* Frees pins up to be used for Power and Ground

* Increases Speed

* Address are sent on two consecutive cycles

המציא אותו Voronoi עוד ב1908.

אף אחד לא המציא שום דבר, זאת פעולה מטמתית. זה היה ברור שזה יכנס, כיוון שיש דרישה לזה כבר שנים, אבל זה עצוב איך שהם התייחסו לכל הארכיטקטורה של הR600 רק כדי לממש אותה בדור הבא.
