The main downside of an incremental backup is that, while the actual archival process can be completed very quickly, the restoration process is actually quite time consuming. In order to restore a previous version of a particular file from an incremental backup, all previous increments must be restored. This requirement helps make sure that the file is restored correctly, but unfortunately can add a great deal of time that the overall process takes to complete.

Additionally, due to the nature of incremental backups files are open to a certain degree of retrieval failure that they wouldn’t be exposed to using other methods. Because all increments have to be restored for a particular file to be recovered, all of those increments must all be restored successfully. If any one of the previous increments of a particular file fails, the entire file will be in an unrecoverable state.
