Questions of Values

Im scared and worried for the future of this country. For the future of its people. For all these dear to me. I grew up believing that this country can be great and peaceful and strong. I grew up believing in democracy and equal rights. I believed that when the time comes to establish a family, I wouldnt have to think twice about the future and the safety of my children.

I still believe that could happen, but the daily routine and events put my believes into a terrible struggle for life. I have to fight with myself and with reality to keep true to the core of the person that I want to be, to preserve the values that are rooted deep inside of me.

Yesterday, 11 years ago Yitzhak Rabin was murdered and the whole county wept. Only 11 years. Its not that much but the country already starts to forget and worse yet to forgive. Not only to forgive the murder but also the consequences. In the light of that terrible day 11 years ago, a few events of the past year stand out to show our lowest points and they are low indeed.

A week ago, the media feasted upon Yigal Amirs (Rabins murderer) 10-hour union with his wife, which, among the rest, brings up very harsh questions about the treatment and the rights of political murderers and the methods of the Israeli legal system. Yet the attention for the event by the media is what hurts the most. The media is supposed to reflect the interest of the public, to be our eyes. If that is true than the situation in Israel is very sad. What kind of a public will treat such a man as a celebrity? What made the media to practically ignore so many events of that day (and the following few days) and give such publicity so much airtime and the front pages of every single major newspaper in the country? After the media rushed to publish all the details they could get (yes - before and after and How was it? In pictures), the same media rushed to criticize it own self and claim How dare they?! and that its too close to public pornography. Yet they published it all, celebrating his big day. The same media that was despising that man only 11 years ago. What made that change?

However disgraceful the incident with Yigal Amir was, other issues of greater importance were on the front pages recently. The war with Lebanon ended up with great damage for both sides and a terrible amount of loss both to lives and property yet with no results whatsoever. It also was an eye opener to the shameful (and sometimes inexistent) state of preparedness at the military rear forces, the poor and thoughtless chain of command and general sloppiness in the organization of all military actions. Soldiers were literally abandoned on the front line with almost no backup or food or instructions. We very well remember our soldiers that were lost in the useless battle and still hope that the 3 young men that were kidnapped by the Hizballah both in Lebanon and the Gaza strip will return home unharmed. Reality usually shows us wrong in these cases. No Israeli kidnapped soldier ever came home alive. Remember Ron Arad? The damage of the war whipped out clean vast territories in south Lebanon, leaving countless victims dead and alive. Families with no home to return to, people lost, people murdered. North of Israel also suffered losses yet not as great. What for? What did we achieve at this war? With the threats of Iran and Syria looming over our heads more and more these days, now, more than ever we must reorganize ourselves, make IDF into what its pretending to be the Israel Defense Force. Defense, not Destruction.

The official war in Lebanon is surely over, but the crisis in the Gaza strip is getting worse by the day. Low sanitary conditions, unemployment and poverty fueled by constant bombing and oppression. Irregular supply of water and electricity and almost no medical aid is not helping the situation at all. Israel has no clear and stable policy as to what to do with Gaza and how to deal with the current situation. The only way they find proper to react is by impulsive outbursts of force only. While theyre saying great words at times about establishing peace with the Palestinians nothing is done on our side. Therefore the conflict lives on.

But what could you expect from a state that has no leadership? It is led by people that dont know what a promise means, that forget, when its convenient for them (which is too often) what truth is. Our politicians are afraid to let a new, young generation to rise and make a change for good or worse because theyre afraid to loose their warm spots in the parliament halls, their cars, their vacations abroad and the power they hold upon more than 6.8 million people the citizens of Israel. Our president Mr. Katzav, for example, is accused with sexual assault. Weather its true or not, a president in a modern and progressed country (which is exactly what Israel considers itself) would usually resign and not hide behind his political immunity because he believes hes innocent, especially if hes truly not guilty.

Our basic laws change easily whenever it suits this party or another because we dont have a constitution. We dont have it for 58 years and counting. The taxes are going up but that money doesnt come back in the shape of welfare like it should (the ministers have very nice houses though!). The education system is crumbling down because they fire teachers (randomly mostly) without thinking twice about it, cutting down the hours kids spend in school, cutting the budget for education. The country that builds itself upon the High-Tech industry, demands an outrageous education fees from the students while these have to struggle not only with academic education, but also with tuition, rent, school books prices and in addition to go to the Reserve military service during school session Every. Single. Year. No wonder the percentage of Academics in Israel is so low, not everyone has wealthy parents to support them

How about the elderly? And the handicapped? And the chronically sick? And the ones that cant afford to buy diapers for their children (and dont even mention the word toys!)? Who takes care of them? Social security is as bureaucratic as it can be and doesnt have budgets. Germany is the one that takes care of the Holocaust survivors (what? you thought its Israel? Why would you think so?) The new immigrants, if theyre lucky enough to get here in a relatively young age, have to struggle for their previous education to be acknowledged by the state. Many dont succeed and end up like the elder ones, work for pennies in terrible jobs while they could do so much more. The medicine basket grows, thats true, but the prices also go up. Ask any lone elderly citizen; theyll give you all the details of their financial struggles for a half decent life.

So what happens now? What can we do? Well, our new minister for strategic matters, Mr. Liberman, offers to separate us, like in Cyprus, and by that resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict at least. I was in Cyprus a short while ago. Its separated all right, by minefields and military bases. Is that the kind of country we want to have? And how would he suggest to resolve the internal conflicts? The racism and the hatred in this small but tense country?

In a few days from now, a wonderful event is supposed to take place downtown Jerusalem The International Pride Parade. Some can support, some can object, but none is allowed to respond by violence. As I see it, the parade is no longer an event for the Gay-Lesbian community; it became a symbol of freedom, tolerance and democracy. In democracy, were supposed to respect each other even if we have different opinions; there are legitimate ways to protest. As I ride through the streets of Jerusalem in the last few days, I see it isnt so. Some areas (mostly and especially the ultra orthodox neighborhoods) look like a Battlefield burning trash, blocked roads, armed police forces. Some of them that object especially strongly to the parade ask the police to cancel it in order to prevent homicide. The homicide might come from them, not anyone else. Thats a direct threat. Theyre using brutal, mass force and violence and try to bully our freedom, our democracy. Today the police is supposed to make a decision weather to allow that parade or not for the fear of murder. Well all wait and see. As someone told me, this parade might be the last one in Jerusalem, I hope it isnt true.

That is Israel today, 11 years after we lost our last strong leader. That murder shocked even these who didnt agree with his policy. And after we lost leadership, were beginning to lose our freedom and therefore, in a way, our sense of self. Last night, in an assembly for the memory of Yitzhak Rabin, a great Israeli writer David Grossman said something I truly agree with. He said, I speak here tonight as a man whose love to this country is a difficult and a complicated one. Nevertheless its unequivocal. So nevertheless, Ill keep on fighting with myself and with this tortured land of milk and honey for my believes, for the importance to keep sane, to keep humane and not to surrender to fear, indifference and hate.

לצערי אני חייב להסכים עם כמעט כל מה שכתוב במאמר, וזה לצערי רק קצה הקרחון.

הדבר הכי מטריד הוא שזאת לא תופעה מקומית, אלא משהו גלובלי.

אם לוקחים את התופעות המטרידות שהמאמר דיבר עליהם ומורידים מהם את המאפיינים היחודיים שלהם (זמן,מקום,שמות וכ')

אפשר לראות בברור שמדובר בתופעות שקרו/קורות/יקרו במקומות אחרים בעולם. ולדעתי לא נראה לי שאפשר לפתור אותם

לחלוטין בעזרת פתרונות "מקומיים", אפשר רק לשפר איתם את המצב לטווח זמן קצר יחסית (אם בכלל).

בשביל שינוי רציני צריך פתרון גלובלי הבעיה שפתרון כזה מצריך שינויים בצורת החשיבה והתנהגות של הגזע האנושי,

שינויים שכל הזמן מתבצעים דרך תהליך שאנחנו קוראים לו אבולוציה. אין לי כוח לדבר על למה שינוי כזה לא יקרה כי זה מדכא אותי

במיוחד שברקע אני שומע את השיר X-treme measures של Destruction.

אני גם לא מסכים עם המשפט האחרון.

לדעתי פחד הוא לא צריך להיות האויב, כל עוד הוא בא מבפנים ולא נשלט על ידי מישהו אחר (כמו במקרה של הדתיים הקיצונים).

אני מכיר כמה אירים ואמריקאים שחושבים על הארץ שלנו טובות ולא כמו אשתך שמלעיזה עלינו בניכר. הרי היא מראש כתבה את הכתבה באנגלית כדי שתוכל לשמח קצת את "ידידנו".

הכתבה סוביקטיבית כמובן וכוללת הרבה "אמיתות" שנויות במחלוקת. האמת היא שהמצב בארץ לא מלבב אבל רחוק מלהיות גרוע ואפשר לנסות לראות את הצדדים החיוביים בו.

אם היחס ליגאל (רוצח נתעב ללא ספק) מעורר בה תחושות כה קשות אולי כדאי לה לפשפש שוב בערכי הדמוקרטיה, השוויון וזכויות האדם הנאורים שלה שגורמים לה לתמוך בהפגנת הגאים בבירת ישראל . . .

סה"כ, אני חייב לציין שרואים שהמאמר כן בא מכאב ומאכפתיות, יש הרבה דברים שאני מסכים איתם ועוד הרבה דברים חסרים.

היא תימצתה סה"כ יפה את רוב הדברים, ואם היא היתה צריכה לכתוב על כל החולאים שלנו אז היה יוצא לה משהו באורך של דוח מבקר המדינה לפחות.

אבל, יש לי בעיה רצינית בנושא הפלסטיני.

לדעתי הוא מציג אותנו בצורה מעוותת ובאור לא חיובי לחינם.

ההלקאה העצמית הזאת, לקיחת האשמה עלינו באופן קבוע ועיוור היא לחלוטין לא במקום.

אין הצדקה לכך וכל מילה שיוצאת בנושא הזה ובצורה הזאת לעולם מסביבו פוגעת בנו ומעקרת אותנו.

יש מספיק אנשים שעושים את זה בעולם, אנחנו לא צריכים להצטרף אליהם ולגונן על הפלסטינים.

אנחנו לא האשמים היחידים במצב הזה, ולכן לקיחת האחריות בלעדית עלינו היא יריה ברגלנו שלנו.

לגבי הפסטיבל סביב יגאל עמיר, אני חושב שהבן-אדם צריך להרקב בכלא, אבל אם מותר לרוצחים אחרים להתחייד עם נשותיהם, אז למה לו אסור?

הרי היא דיברה שם בעצמה על כך שכל ממשלה מחוקקת חוקים שמתאימים לה, אז למה לצפות לחוק שונה פה?

אם שוללים ליגאל עמיר את ההתייחדות, צריך לשלול אותה לכל הרוצחים, ולא משנה אם הם רצחו ראש-ממשלה, שופט או סתם אזרח.
