Server MIFRAT is needed!

Hello, I need help to figure out what would be the best, and most stable basic stuff to meet those needs:

1) Running on 100mbit full duplex line, probably be upgraded to 200mbiit and later might go up to gbit speeds.

2) Be able to withstand constanous load on it both ways - 100mbit both ways, maby people logged in on ftp server. box will be on Linux.

3) capable of having many controllers (to support 4TB hdds total space and more, must support raid 5 and 6 if there is just better and gigabit nic cards (to future support gigabit speeds of about 125MB/s upload and download).

4) be able to be up long time w.out downtimes as much as possible

*Please make suggestions for RELIABLE HW! which wont make misterious problems. mobo should be dual slots at least. and reliable means also known and good 'father' to support it, unless u can suggest better.

PRICE DOES NOT MATTER! its not problem.

I have got so far 2 offers for basic box(mobo, cpu, ram), pls ignore the extra hdds, as they are Nothing important and its no problem to get those when have good base for it.

Keep in mind I want good proposals and suggestions for GOOD, RELIABLE HW! people who can suggest only on base of cost and not on experience OR reviews they read and feedbacks they recived, please dont bother to suggest, it will be no use for either u or me..

אם אין לך בעיה כלכלית, אני מציע שתשכח מלהרכיב את השרת שלך ככה ותקנה שרת של חברה גדולה.

אמנם, הם לרוב מפגרים מעט מבחינה טכנולוגית (לוקח חודש-חודשיים-שלושה עד שהם מאמצים טכנולוגיות שהגיעו כבר לשוק), אבל

מבחינת תכנון כולל של המערכת, אין עליהם. מארזים טובים ונוחים, ניהול חומרה טוב יותר, וכו'.

הלוחות שאתה מקבל הם לוחות שרתים פרופר: יותר יציבים, תומכי ECC, יש onboard SCSI, כרטיסי רשת כפולים (שני כרטיסים של גיגהביט),

סלוטים של PCI-X, וכן הלאה. שווה.

קח שרת מבוסס שני מעבדי Opteron של HP או IBM, ותהיה שמח.

אם יש לך rack 19", אתה בכלל יכול לקחת שרת 1U או 2U, ולסגור עניין.

תחסוך לעצמך כאב ראש וזמן ככה. חסרון? הכסף, אבל אמרת שזה לא משנה לך.

hmm I have been checking diffrent mobos from ASUS especially, they seems good except for one small details: all the server mobos are DDR 266mhz?

I dont want to take ready from company, since we will make changes of our own like adding our hdds, controllers etc.

our current server just isn't strong enough enymore and crashe pretty much.

also we have rack 19" so basically all we need is new good mobo and cpu adn ECC RAM..

I estimate the cost would be somewehre around 3000$. assuming we take Xeon or Xeon MP and 512mb ECC for start.. but why are the ASUS mobos, which seems good and up to date technologically - have so slow memory?

א. כדאי לך לקחת פתרון מבוסס Opteron ולא Xeon.

ב. ללוחות שרתים, באמת מומלץ ללכת על Tyan - זו ההתמחות.

ג. לגבי המארז, אני מציע שתקנה את הכי טוב שאתה מסוגל, ולא ספק אחד אלא שניים, עם Hot Swap.

עוד לא נתקלתי במארז שיארח כלכך הרבה דיסקים, מצד שני, עוד לא ניסיתי.

10 הרד דיסקים, שני מעבדים, ואתה עוד רוצה ספק בודד של 450 וואט? הUPS לא שייך, את זה אני מניח שיש לו בלי קשר.

שני ספקים נועדו להתגבר על תקלות בספק, שאכן קורות מדי פעם. וכמו שאמרתי, זו משאבת חשמל רצינית - שני ספקים יהיו מתאימים יותר מספק אחד.

אני לא יודע אם אתה מכיר את שוק השרתים, אבל המצב שונה מאשר במחשבים ביתיים. המטרה היא לא תמיד לחסוך כסף, ואין מה לעשות - בשרת מוכן,

אתה מקבל כמה דברים שאין בשרת שאתה מרכיב בעצמך. בשביל לשחק קצת בבית, או סתם עוד שרת, אין בעיה להרכיב.

שרת רציני, שבו כל דקה של downtime מיתרגמת לנזק כספי, עדיף לקנות מחברה.

יצא לי להתעסק פה ושם עם שרתים, ואני יודע ששרת ייעודי הוא דבר די מגניב, עם כלמיני תוספות מועילות שלא תמצא סתם ככה.

זה לא אומר שאי אפשר להרכיב משהו לבד, פשוט בשוק הזה - לרוב לא כדאי.

אני חושב בכל מקרה שספק בודד של 450-500 וואט יספיק, במידה ואתה רוצה להכפיל העלות [כי ספק ממותג של 500 וואט יעלה מעל 500 ש"ח]..צריך לשים לב ליעדי השרת, האם פעילותו תתבצע 24 שעות ביממה? האם יש שרתי גיבוי?

well we use Antec True Power 480w atm

the rack is 19" UI belive.. but new one costs not much at all.. sec I will add some links.

yea the server needs max. uptime.. we basically dont loose money if it goes down for an hour or two, but if it gopes for days we do

Also, why are the Opetron better than Xeon? can you suggest Tyan mobo which is similiar to the one above and its for the Opetron? basically we dont need hot swap for hdds, cuase from time to time we will take server down to add more hdds to host more stuff on it

Also hdds arent prob cause there are special cases for hdd mounts.. dedicated only for hdds. we will use that when we reach max. on the current case.

Somehow it seems that ready server from companies is more expensive than parts.. and we basically dont need the hdds coming with it etc. we jsut need mobo+cpu+ECC RAM for now.

And no backup server as well.. so that one should be as stable as possible 

So you say Tyan are the best and most reliable for servers? whats the newest one atm? both Oeptron and Xeon based. newest in techniological support I mean.

We are trying to find something that good which supports all I mentioned, (mobo+512ECC+1cpu) for about 3000$.

more cpu can be added later as needed. and I would like mobo which supports the newer fast rams (400mhz+)
