    אחד הדברים העיקרים ברובי הוא להיות שפה שקל וכיף לכתוב בה (כמובן שהכל יחסי). בד"כ משתמשים בה בתור שפת סקריפטים עבור אוטומציה (ישירות או בעקיפין בכלים כמו chef ו-puppet), יצירת תוכנות קטנות עד בינוניות, ובתחום פיתוח אתרים בעזרת framework מפורסם שנקרא ruby on rails. היא הרבה יותר נפוצה בסביבות לינוקס מאשר וינדוס.
