Intel Core i9: Hands-on test of the six-core Gulftown

Several months in advance to the expected market introduction PC Games Hardware was able to get a prototype of the forthcoming Gulftown processor. What can gamers expect from the six-core CPU that will probably be marketed as Core i9-XXX? Application and game benchmarks with the 32 nanometer processor give a preview of Intel's Westmere architecture

Core i9: Roadmap and alternatives

Our six-core sample makes us hungry for more, even if the processor will never hit the markets in this setup. According to the roadmap, which Intel refreshed for the Fall IDF, Gulftown arrives in "2010”. At least Paul Otellini revealed that the first Westmere processors are already under construction and would be shipped to customers in Q4 2009. So if there are no more delays Gulftown could be released close to the end of Q1 2010, probably around Cebit (early March) or the next IDF (early April).

Since Gulftown is a high-end processor and will replace the current Extreme models Core i7-965 and Core i7-975, the launch prices won't be set to less than 1.000 USD. That lower priced versions with lower frequencies will become available is not confirmed yet.

    נחמד, אבל בטח ליום יום ולמשחקים זה לא יהיה משתלם. כנראה שלא רלוונטי לרוב המשתמשים. אפילו למשתמשים שבשבילם זה יהיה פיתרון מעניין - אולי זה לא יצא לפועל משום המחירים, גם משום מחירי הלוחות (X58).

    מעניין מה תהיה ההשפעה של כניסת ה-gulftown וה-clarkdale על מחירי ה-bloomfield וה-lynnfield. (ובכלל, גם כשיכנסו מעבדים מתחרים של AMD)

    לדעתי לא יהיה השפעה גדולה יותר מדיי ולא בטוח שבקרוב כל כך... אולי ירידה של מדרג אחד.
