Compared to the K20D, the new Pentax K-7 feels faster and more responsive in virtually every respect. One area of particular improvement appears to be its AF system.
We don't have a quantitative measurement of AF performance in our test suite, and as of this writing have been able to make only limited and fairly unscientific comparisons between the prototype K-7 and K20D, but our strong subjective impression has been that the Pentax K-7 achieves focus much more quickly in difficult situations of low light and/or low subject contrast than does the K20D. This contributed greatly to the sense of responsiveness we felt when using the Pentax K-7.

This means that incoming reddish light won't be bent as much as bluish-tinted light would be. AF systems are adjusted to produce accurate results with daylight-balanced lighting, where all the colors are more or less equally represented. This works well in most situations, but when faced with a strongly-tinted light source, an AF system can misjudge the point of correct focus. Two commonly-encountered extremes are the very warm hue of household incandescent lighting, or the cool bluish tones of open shade outdoors. By measuring the overall tint of the ambient lighting, the AF system in the Pentax K7 can compensate for these errors, and deliver more accurate focusing under a wide range of light colors.

When shooting on a tripod, it is possible to fine-tune your framing by manually controlling the position and rotation of the image sensor. A total of one degree rotation and two millimeters of horizontal or vertical adjustment are available on either side of the centered position.

One of the big deals about the K-7 to me is the shutter noise. It's very quiet. The main point of having a smallish camera is so that it's easy to carry it around with you wherever you go; and if you're using it as a visual notepad, you might call it, then quite often it's useful not to call attention to yourself by clacking away piercingly and drawing stares from anyone nearby. The K-7's shutter is quiet for an SLR by any standard, both in the level and the type of noise it makes. The AF noise is actually louder than the shutter.

the K-7 is the fastest Pentax DSLR ever made with a top burst shooting speed of 5.2 frames per second (40 JPEGs, 15 RAW/PEF or 14 RAW/DNG). Anyone who's still foolish enough to think Pentax cameras aren't fast enough for professional motorsports needs to spend an afternoon at the track with the K-7. Pentax also claims that the 11-point autofocus system in the K-7 uses improved focus algorithms over previous Pentax cameras ... and during my week-long test of the K-7 I can confirm it is noticeably faster than any Pentax camera I've previously used.

When it comes to image quality, I honestly feel like kissing the Pentax engineers responsible for the K-7. Although our pre-production unit didn't come with the final firmware, image quality at all ISO settings seems noticeably superior to the K10D or K20D in terms of image noise and color. More importantly, Pentax finally seems to have figured out how to build a camera with extremely accurate white balance.

The new 11-point SAFOX VIII+ (lousy name) autofocus system was also quick and reliable even in this pre-production camera. The system uses 9 cross sensors, 2 wide-angle sensors, and has a dedicated assist lamp to help target your subject while shooting in low light. Speaking of low light, I was impressed with how quickly the pre-production camera locked in its focus in uneven and downright bad lighting.
According to a Pentax product person I spoke with, the K-7's new autofocus system detects colors and wavelengths of light which helps its locks in autofocus in tricky lighting conditions such as tungsten. I experienced very little to no "lens hunting" which was a big plus.
