Internet Speeds in Israel: Please Explain

I'm slowly learning to accept that broadband Internet speed in this country is a joke. Any of you who have ever lived in a normal country know what I'm talking about. In Toronto You pay for 5 meg and you get 5 meg. Period. Here you pay for 5 meg and you get 5 meg as long as you're trying to connect to the Speedtest.net server in Petach Tikvah. Try to use the internet like normal people do and you start to feel yourself losing hair. It's abysmal (English word of the day look it up) ). My question is WHY!?!?

WHY is it so freaking slow here? Why so inconsistent? Why so unreliable?

WHY?

ISP?

WHY ? because everybody is trying to save money, because we have a crappy location realative to mainstream internet hubs, and because there is no real public consumer uprising

It's pretty simple, you don't pay for 5 megabytes... you pay for 5 megabit, and this is what you get (for download).

talk about unrelated answers...

as if people pay here for 5 megabits actually get it at a consistent way

Bad routing, this answer is good enough for you?

Has nothing to do with routing. It's because t he infrastructures here are shitty.

it's not exactly bad infrastructures, but more - the lack of some.

While keeping your hops inside the country everything is OK, we actually have some good infrastructures around here.

the problems starts when you are trying to get our. there aren't enough fibers spread from the ocean (abroad) to Israel, and it's all a matter of money, so i think that the best definition for our case is that if you are buying a package which should give you X BW, you are actually buying UP TO X BW...

You better get used to it, cause you won't feel any dramatic change any time soon.

lack of infrastructure... i completely agree

the isp's are too fucking depending on the MED-1 , instead of getting their own fiber

Speeds inside the country are generally good so I have to wonder if there isn't some sort of national "security firewall" messing up international communications. At least for consumer traffic, anyway. I can't imagine the folks working at Microsoft, Intel, etc, use the same lines that we do. They probably have OC48 right to the desktop, those bastids. :)

because inside the country it passes via the internal IIX which is basically an inner-country router and doesn't waste the small out-of-country bandwidth we have.

Hey Canadian boy, you seem to forget one thing...

YOU'RE NOT IN TORONTO ANYMORE!!!

When you lived in that cold place you most likely used websites who's servers are BASED in the US or Canada, therefore the distance the information had to travel was shorter and thus your speed was greater.

Welcome to the middle-east, buddy!

And let's not forget that in Israel the service is divided to both an infrastructure provider and an ISP, while in Canada (unless I'm very much mistaken) the infrastructure-provider also provides the access which cuts out the middleman and helps prevent many f**kups.

I have a 5meg line at home and it works beautifully, and considering Bezeq is moving to it's NGN (FTTC infrastructure) it means that soon, very soon, we'll all see 10, 20 and up to 50Mbps lines as a norm.

Sorry Israel is not as "advanced" as your precious Canada...
