I was having thi s problem with one of my two E280 Sansas. After a couple days of dealing with SanDisk customer support I finally got it working. Pasted below is the email chain of events that got it working.

Your Question/Request:I have 2 E280 Sansas. I subscribed to Rhapsody to go. One of the Sansas works fine with Rhapsody. I can transfer subscription and purchased music. The other one doesn't work with Rhapsody at all. I can't transfer subscription or purchased music from Rhapsody. I get an error that says "A problem has occurred in obtaining the device's certificate". The one I tried first is the one that doesn't work. When I used the second one it worked fine. I can transfer my own music. I have tried reformatting, updating firmware, deleting all music and reloading both from Rhapsody and on the Sansa. I have tried removing the battery to reset the Sansa. I read something somewhere about deleting the store.hds file. The Sansa that doesn't work doesn't even have a store.hds file. Any more suggestions?SanDisk Response: (01/01/2007 11:09)Hello *****,

Thank you for contacting SanDisk Technical Support, and for your recent inquiry into our product line.

We do apologize for any inconveniences that this issue may have caused you.

This issue may be due to some sort of corruption on the player itself. We should try formatting the player as a possible solution.

First, please press the power button for about 20 seconds to soft reset your player.

Caution: Formatting will erase all information on the Sansa mp3 player. Please be sure to have a back up of all the information before proceeding.

Please note: The Sansa e200 mp3 series is supported ONLY on Windows XP as the MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode will function, only on Windows XP and it requires Windows Media Player version 10 in order to function properly.

Also, MTP mode will not give you the FAT or FAT32 option. As soon as you select format, it will begin the operation, and format it accurately.

Before formatting, please set your player to MSC (Mass Storage Class) mode.

Setup Mode to MSC

1) Tap your menu button and select "Settings" > "USB".

2) On this screen, make sure that there is a check next to "MSC" and NOT "Auto Detect" or MTP.

If you have the Rhapsody version (wherein you have the Rhapsody Channel on the main menu), please have your player on Rhapsody mode.

Setup Mode to Rhapsody

1) Tap your menu button and select "Settings" > "Mode".

2) On this screen, make sure that there is a check next to "Rhapsody" and NOT "Play for Sure".

To format the player on your PC, let us connect the e200 to your computer on an USB port preferably located near the power hub or to an external self powered USB hub, go to My Computer, single right click on the Removable Disk associated with your player, and select Format. Let us please make sure that, under FILE SYSTEM, we change FAT to FAT32, and then single left click Start. This will erase all data off the e200 and correct errors on it, which should make the e200 usable again.

We also recommend formatting the player another way. Please be advised that formatting will erase all data.

Please right click on my computer and select Manage. When Computer Management comes up, please click on Disk Management on the left hand side. After clicking on Disk Management you should now have a list of drives in the right side panel. On the right, look for the e200, it may show up as Disk 1, 2, 3 Removable Disk. Right click on the larger "Volume" rectangular icon to the right of the Removable disk and select Format choosing FAT32. If you do not have the format option, please select "New Partition" and just keep clicking next through the Wizard that appears.

After formatting the e200, please do try your player.

If you have the standard e200, if applicable, please download the firmware update for your e200 from our website. The link is:

http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1368

However if you have the Rhapsody version, wherein you have the Rhapsody Channel option on the main menu, please refer to this link for the firmware update, if applicable:

http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1449

CAUTION: please do not interchange the firmware updates.

If formatting and firmware update in your computer is not possible, please do try the process again on another Windows XP computer.

NOTE: Please be aware that formatting is a normal and necessary method of drive maintenance and repair, and simply NOT formatting periodically can cause a drive to slip into failure due to the backup, and clutter of residual data.

Should you have any further inquiries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via Email.

Best regards,

Your Response: (01/02/2007 04:05)I tried the soft reset and then I tried formatting the player numerous ways before but I tried it again. I updated firmware before but tried it gain. It stills says I have latest firmware. Still unable to transfer music. I still get an error that says "A problem has occurred in obtaining the device's certificate". What next?SanDisk Response: (01/02/2007 07:42)Hello **********,

Thank you for contacting SanDisk Technical Support.

Can you transfer non-subscription music?

Please transfer or copy music from your computer which is a non-licensed music. To the player, you must set the player in MSC mode and then drag and drop the music from your computer to the player.

The Sansa e200 players have 2 modes, each used for loading songs into the player: MTP (Music Transfer Protocol) and MSC (Mass storage Class).

When in MSC mode, your player functions as a regular removable drive. In MTP mode, you need your music software to manage your files.

To switch mode tap your menu button and select "Settings" > "USB". You should see MTP and MSC.

The MSC mode is used to directly copy UNLICENSED songs into the player. Simply copy the files into the drive associated to your player as you would copy any regular file into different folders (drag and drop or copy and paste). To delete the files, simply browse for the song in the sansa m250 drive (in "My Computer" and delete.

The MTP mode is used to load LICENSED and PROTECTED songs into the player. To do that, you need your music application (Windows Media Player 10, Rhapsody-To-Go, etc) to sync the songs into your player. Simply follow the software instructions on how to sync. In Windows Media Player 10, simply right click on a file or a playlist and select "add to synclist". After you have completed your list, simply click "Start Sync". You will also need this application to delete your song files. Simply click the "Sync" tab, browse for your song under "Portable Device", right click, and select remove from device.

You need to switch between modes, since songs added in one mode may not be browsed (nor deleted), in the other mode.

Note: The player is only supported on WINXP computers with Windows Media Player 10 and up to support MTP for subscription files.

Once done, kindly transfer a licensed music from computer to the player on another WINXP computer, the MP3 player must be in MTP mode.

We need to do the above steps for us to verify if the issue is on the computer, on the player or on your Rhapsody account.

Should you have any further inquiries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via Email.

Best regards,

Your Response: (01/03/2007 12:32)I can transfer non subscription music in MSC mode. I can transfer non subscription music in Mtp Mode using WMP and Rhapsody. I cannot transfer licensed music using this computer or another computer. I even purchased music from rhapsody and tried to transfer it. I can't even transfer purchased music. But I can do everything with the other Sansa using either computer. SanDisk Response: (01/03/2007 05:19)Hello *****,

Thank you for contacting SanDisk Technical Support.

This issue could have been caused by file corruption or system errors on the device.

We should be able to fix your player. Disconnect the player from the computer if it is connected.

Please copy and paste the following link into your web browser address bar, and then click Go or hit your Enter key. When prompted, choose the option to Save the file to your Desktop.

http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/Downloads/firmware/e200fw01.00.12.exe

Once you have downloaded the file, please follow these instructions.

1) Double click on My Computer so that you can see it on your screen.

2) Turn the player off.

3) On the top of the player is a Hold switch, move it to the right (toward the headphone jack) so you see Orange.

4) On the left hand side of the player is a Record button, press and hold it while connecting the player to the computer. Continue holding the Record button until you see a new icon under "My Computer" called 16MB FORMAT. Once you see that icon you may release the Record button.

5) Double click the file you downloaded earlier and run it. Follow all of the on-screen instructions, and when you get to the prompt where it asks you whether you would like to Format it, choose Yes. Once it is done, click Finish.

6) Disconnect the player and look at the screen. Several things will be displayed, and when you see Key Lock, System Shutdown, move the Hold switch on the top back to the left.

7) Turn the player on and watch the screen. If you see a Refresh Database Fail error, you will need to follow steps 1-7 again until you do not get the error. If it does not work the first time, it could take up to 3 times for it to work.

Please advise.

Should you have any other concerns and queries please let us know, it is indeed our pleasure to assist you.

Best regards,
