it's very hard to explain how automatic transmission work, so I won't go into detail. all you need to know is that all the possible gears are always connect and the way the transmission select the gear ratio it wants is by locking every other gear except the certain gear it is going to use.

going from N to D will not damage the gear what so ever if the resulting engine RPM will be in the ideal range (or near it), other wise there will be slight wear but not much more than driving at the same resulting engine RPM. the only way to actually do any damage is by going downhill and exceeding the top speed on N and then changing to D and even then the engine will probably take more damage than the transmission.

due to the way automatic transmission works even changing from D to R at 50km/h will not destroy the gear, but it's far from healthy. as to reving at N and selecting D, it will probably do less damage to the transmission than doing the equivalent with manual gear with a high quality clutch (and releasing it at once). at any case since the wheels can't pull more than 0.9g (1g if you got high quality tires and 1.2g if you got slics) and that's assuming you got AWD, those are loads the transmission is build to withstand.

also as a side note, the throttle affect on the amount of fuel the engine is receiving is indirect. the throttle is connect to the air intake, the computer (in fuel injection enignes) controls the flow of fuel according to an air-to-fuel sensor. [/ltr]

I said the throttle controls the air intake and the fuel is controlled by the computer according to an air-to-fuel sensor. if the mixture is too lean it adds more fuel if it's too rich it lowers the amount of fuel. the air-to-fuel is ideally always the same around 15:1 weight ratio (not volume!).[/ltr]
