    היתרון המשמעותי על פני VCD שכאן ניתן לקודד בקצב משתנה (VBR) ולעלות או לרדת מהקצב הקבוע הסטנדרטי של VCD. זה לא סטנדרט חדש אלה משחק עם קידוד ב MPEG I. לא כל מכשיר חיצוני מסוגל להציג XVCD.
