First, head over to: http://www.viahardware.com/download/viatweak.shtm you need to download WPCREDIT and WPCRSET and the KT266\266A Plug. WPCREDIT is a self-extracting exe, put it in it's own folder. The KT266A Plug zip file has two files in, extract these to the same directory as WPCREDIT. We'll worry about WPCRSET later. once you have the things extracted, there should a executable 'WPPCREDIT'. Run that file. If everything was extracted right, when the program opens, you should see at the top of the Window the Correct Vendor ID: "1106 VIA VT8366 KT266). If you don't see that, the Plug files are in the wrong directory.

If you're doing okay at this point, you should see a grid of lots of two digits 'numbers' containing both letters and numbers; basically hex values. Find 90 on the left side of the grid, and move over till it intersects with the '05' column (really the sixth column). This is register 95, the register responsible for the cooling tweak. The default value should be '1C'. Look now at the bottom of the window and you should see in the middle: "Hex: 1C" and "Bin: 00011100". Select the second to last zero in the bin section. In the far right frame you should see a small star appear next to the text: "HALT Command Detect". Change the 0 to a 1, and hit the 'Set' button. Before you do it, have the Giga-Byte temp monitor open. As soon as you set the register, you should see your temps start dropping dramatically.

If everything is hunky dory up to this point. It's time to play with WPCRSET. The reason for this program is that this register must be set at each boot, it is reset to the default value after each reboot. So, extract the WPCRSET file as you did the WPCREDIT. Run the new install file titled: "INSTDD.EXE". It will ask you to reboot, but you don't need to. Now, run WPCRSET.EXE. A small window should open. In the top left corner, select under 'WPCRSET', 'Start'. Then click on the add button. There are five fields in the new window. In the 'Regsiter' field, type '95'. In the 'Data' field' put '1E'. Click Ok and Ok again. It should ask you to reboot. Now, on each reboot, it will automatically set this register. This only works while in Windows.

A few notes: If you use the Suspend-to-RAM feature (or Hibernate) the register is reset and so after being turned back on, the cooling tweak will not be enabled. Also, When I first started using this tweak, I was using a seperate sound card than the built in sound. I've since gone back to the built in sound, however, the sound sucks (extremely scratchy and skippy). I think it's because the built in sound relies on computering power of the Northbridge or the CPU itself. The effect is not present when the CPU is not at idle (that make sense?). So, I no longer use the tweak.

:smoke:
