Is it importent to lap both the CPU and it's cooler?

I'm afraid of damaging the CPU if I lap it.. If I lap only the CPU's cooler-will it give me better results? Or I have to lap them both?

    It will show results, but lapping itself giving only minor improvement, I think lapping the CPU is not a must.
