1 Speed up Start Menu Search

1. Open Registry Editor (regedit).

2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer and finally Advanced.

3. Find and right click on Start_SearchFiles and select Modify.

4. Set the Value to 0.

5. Restart the Explorer.exe process or just reboot your computer

2 Disable Welcome Center

Disabling the Welcome Center is very easy to do and can speed up your boot as well.

1. Start Regedit.

2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run.

3. Right click on the WindowsWelcomeCenter key and select Delete.

The next time you restart the Welcome Center will be gone.

3 Show Administrator on Welcome Screen

a) start > run = "control userpasswords2"

b) select administrator account, click reset password (input new pass) and hit "Ok"

c) start > run = "regedit"

e) create "DWORD (32bit) Value" with Value Name: Administrator and Value Data: 1

Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit.

When Registry Editor loads navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion and Internet Settings.

Right click on MaxConnectionsPerServer and select Modify. Set the decimal value to 20.

Right click on MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server and select Modify. Set the decimal value 20.

Reboot.

Method 1: Registry Hack

1. Open registry editor using regedit.

2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer and select Advanced.

3. Find and right-click on Start_SearchFiles and select Modify.

4. Set the Value to 0.

5. Restart the Explorer.exe process or reboot the computer.

Method 2: Start Button

1. Right-click on the Start Button and select Properties.

2. Click on the Customize button.

3. Uncheck Search Communications.

4. Set Search Files to Don't Search for files.

5. Click OK.

6 Speed up Flip 3D

Click on the Start Button, key in regedit and hit Enter.

Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, DWM.

Create a new DWORD and call it Max3DWindows

Set the value of this to something between 4 and 9 depending on the performance of your card. Experiment with the values to find the best value for your hardware.

Restart the DWM interface by running net stop uxsms and net start uxsms at a administrative level command prompt. Alternatively, you can just reboot your computer.

5 Disable USB storage device write (make them read-only)

To setup read only USB storage device operation, follow these steps below:

Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.

Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control.

Right click on Control and select New and then Key. Call the new key StorageDevicePolicies.

Right click on StorageDevicePolicies and select New and then Dword. Call the new dword WriteProtect.

Right click on WriteProtect and select Properties. Set the value to 1 and hit OK.

The computer is now configured to disable writing to USB storage devices.

open the registry edit (start, run, regedit)

navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]

set WaitToKillServiceTimeout =30(which sets it to 1 seconds)

7 Disabling auto-start applications with Windows Defender

Click on the Start Button and type in Windows Defender and hit Enter.

Click on the Tools from the top menu bar.

Click on Software Explorer.

Hit Show for All Users.

Select an application and then click either Remove or Disable.

8 Disabling auto-start applications with the System Configuration Utility

There are 2 ways to stop applications that auto-start when you login to Windows Vista. You can either use the System Configuration Utility or the new Software Explorer in Windows Defender:

Method 1: System Configuration Utility

1. Click on the Start Button, enter msconfig and hit Enter.

2. Click on the Startup tab.

3. Uncheck items that you do want to auto-start and click OK.

Method 2: Windows Defender

1. Click on the Start Button, enter Windows Defender and hit Enter.

2. Click on the Tools from the top menu bar.

3. Click on Software Explorer and select Show for All Users.

4. Select an application to either Remove or Disable.

9 Remove text from desktop icons

Removing the text below an icon on your desktop has been a classic Windows tweak for years. In Windows Vista, the same old tweak works.

Right click on the icon and select Rename.

Then hold down the ALT key and type in 255 on your right keypad. If you are on a laptop turn on numlock and use the K and I keys to enter in 255. This is the code for a space.

Hit Enter when you are done.

10 Restore Desktop Icons

Right click on your desktop and select Personalize.

Click Change Desktop Icons under tasks on the top left.

Check the icons you want to display.

Hit OK.

11 Use small icons in Start Menu

Right click on the Start Button and select Properties.

Click on the Customize button.

Scroll to the bottom of the list and remove the check from Use large icons.

You can now also increase the number of recently run programs that are displayed to something larger than 9.

Hit OK when you are finished.
