Software KB Windows XP helps itself to 20 per cent of yourbandwidth, but although this sounds like the sort ofthing that could easily fuel paranoia (what's it doingwith it?), it's more just a case of sloppy andwasteful configuration. The culprit is the QoS (quality of service) packetscheduler, which is intended to preserve someavailable bandwidth for important applications and inorder to maintain network performance. It does thisfor the best of reasons; in a business environment youprobably don't want to have the system brought to itsknees because Dave in support is busy warezingEmannuelle in Tibet (Would you believe it? This onereally exists. Really.). But this doesn't necessarilyapply if you're using XP at home and/or you just wantto get a big file as fast as possible. This will help increase your bandwidth for any networkconnection in Windows XP PRO.1. Make sure your logged on as actually"Administrator". do not log on with any account thatjust has administrator privileges. To log in as anadministrator: -click on start->logoff->logoff-in the logon screen hold Ctrl+Alt+Del.-in the user field type 'Administrator' <-casesensitive.-in the password field type the password for theadministrator (if you don't have one leave blank)-press ok2. Start - run - type gpedit.msc3. Expand the "Computer configuration" branch4. Expand the "Administrative templates" branch5. Expand the "Network" branch6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window7. In right window double click the "limit reservablebandwidth" setting8. On setting tab check the "enabled" item9. Where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read0-- Click apply, OK, exit gpedit.msc10. Go to your Network connections (start->mycomputer->my network connection-> view networkconnections). Right click on your connection, chooseproperties then under the General or the Networkingtab (where it lists your protocols) make sure QoSpacket scheduler is enabled.11. Reboot , now you are all done. This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. Inother words, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of thebandwidth for itself even with QoS disabled. So whynot use it to your advantage. To demonstrate theproblem, start up a big download from a server with anFTP client. Try to find a server that doesn't max outyour bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to mediumspeed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for acouple of minutes to get stable. The start up anotherdownload from the same server with another instance ofyour FTP client. You will notice that the availablebandwidth is now being fought over and one of theclients download will be very slow or both will slowdown when they should both be using the availablebandwidth. Using this "tweak" both clients will have afair share of the bandwidth and will not fight overthe bandwidth.
