As off October 1st , all WD drives will have 1 year warranty only , except the "JB " that will have 3 years . Also attached an article that explains a little bit more . Desktop HDD Warranties Dropping Why? In the recent 10 days, both Maxtor and Western Digital have announced that warranties for the vast majority of desktop HDDs will now be one-year versus three-years. Three-year warranties will still be in place for the Maxtor MaXLine and Western Digital "Drivezilla" performance products. Since Maxtor's initial announcement, numerous questions about the reasons behind the move, as well as the ramifications have surfaced. The following is our view on the reasons, and benefits, of such a move. WHY? Simply stated, the move to one-year warranties will save HDD companies significant money. As strange as this may sound, many HDDs companies have historically spent more money on warranty costs and customer service issues per drive, than they have on other key elements (such as marketing, sales etc;). The task in tracking such a vast numbers of drives over a 3 year period (Over 100M HDDs) is burdensome to nearly any existing system today. Additionally, nearly all name brand PCs carry one-year warranties, so aligning ones HDD portfolio with the standard PC warranty looks to be a sensible move. According to one HDD company, the cost (as an industry) for service calls on an HDD is $5-$10 per call and go on to add that most calls after the first year tend to be less substantial (in terms of actual warranty issues) than those received in the first year. These announcements Maxtor and WD have made will likely be followed by the remaining desktop HDD suppliers in the coming weeks. BENEFITS? Aside from the easy one financial the biggest benefit is that this allows HDD companies to no longer track a huge number of products over a three-year period. The entire tracking process adds little value to the company anyway. Additionally, the three-year warranty period is forcing HDD suppliers to service capacity points that are out of date and frankly useless. Imagine the calls an HDD supplier gets today to "service" a 2-6 GB IDE desktop drive. When one examines other products (MP3 players, printers, PCs, TVs, VCRs), it becomes apparent that HDDs are one of the few technologies, which still offered 3-5 year warranties. Lastly, this warranty change should allow for HDD suppliers to market products effectively. Low-end, mainstream products will all (depending on the other suppliers) carry one-year warranties, while performance or "special edition" products will offer enhanced features like an 8 MB buffer and carry longer warranty periods.
