First, please forgive me not writing in Hebrew... something in my laptop got screwed up...

Anyway, I need help in building a spec for a new development machine (also, this machine would probably also run games, display video files etc...) - my budget is roughly 1,000$ - for that I would like:

* CPU - recommendations? Intel/AMD?

* RAM - 2GB

* HD - at least 160GB SATA

I need this machine to be as quiet as possible.

That's about it I guess...

Do you mean 4600 NIS? Or are you buying from abroad?

I mean about 5,000 NIS - the reason it's in Dollars is beacuse I get the money as dollars, that's it...

Well, the development projects I'm involoved with are pretty varied... this project to which I'm getting ready for is the development of a software system which also includes some dedicated hardware (Telephony boards) - the actual data rate isn't too high, but I'd like it to be ready to handle the following:

* Visual Studio

* MS SQL Server

* Source Safe

* File Server

It should also support the services I will be developing for this project (and it will also be a debug machine while the project is being tested...)

In addition, this machine will also serve as my main machine at home (I currently have a 5 year old PIII which can't do much except run my BitTorrent client and my Outlook...)

Oh, and one other thing - since I'm going to have at least 3 machines in my final setup (this new server, the old machine and my laptop) I intend to buy a KVM switch - any ideas?

I also did some checking around and it seems that I should also buy a UPS (at least a small one)...

Regarding a screen - I intend to buy a non-brand 19'' LCD screen, as long as the refresh is fine I don't mind.

for runing the programs u need u can buy a pc for 250$ and it will work just fine-maybe some memorey add

I'm sorry but I don't belive a 250$ PC will be enough, the main reason is that this PC won't do just development, it would also be an integration PC, run a bunch of processes, use specific deidcated hardware and later I'd probably want to watch vids on it and play games... Biodome... Thanks for the reply - I would like to ask you several questions:

1) I hope that regarding development I made it clear in my previous posts... If you have any questions feel free to ask...

2) What's the difference between the Intel processor you offered and the AMD processor Org-e offered? Take into account that the software I'll be working on will involve lots of threads - but it's not like any real-time system which requires actual low-level stuff, I'm letting the OS handle that...

3) What tweaks would be required for an ultra-quiet machine... I took a look at your quiet machine, seems way more expensive than my budget...

In that case, what would you recommend?

i can asnwer few things about 2:

if you are going to use a softare wich was spcefic comiled for processor than u should buy that proccesor .

in most cases AMD proccesors are better in multi tasking etc etc,even on my 1600 athlon i ran very much tasks and it works graet.

intel will be much more better in viedo coding and decoding their main advntage over AMD.

I have (or in the process of estabilishing) my own software company - doing projects for various people. And the reason I'm writing in English is that for some obscure reason my Hebrew got screwed up in IE and I just didn't have the time to start fixing it...
