אין לכם NFC בסמארטפון? NFC microSD יפתור את הבעיה

כשהארנק הדיגטלי ממש מעבר לפינה, וגוגל היא זו שעומדת מאחורי זה, רק עניין של זמן עד שזה יגיע לכולנו, אולם כיום מספר המכשירים אשר תומכים בטכנולוגית ה-NFC הוא מועט מאוד והשינוי שיתרחש ויגיע גם למכשירים הקטנים לא יקרה מהר.

בדיוק בשביל זה חברת Netcom הסינית פיתחה כרטיס זיכרון מסוג microSD עם צ'יפ NFC בנוי בפנים. ממש בדומה לכרטיסי EyeFi המאפשר קישוריות WiFi עם אחסון פנימי למצלמות, גם כרטיס זה מספק תקשורת אלחוטית מסוג NFC בשילוב של אחסון פנימי של 8GB.

לפני שתרוצו לקנות, עדיין ישנם מספר מגבלות הדורשות את פעילותו התקינה כדוגמת מכשיר שאין בו חלקי מתכת מאחור או בסביבת חריץ ה-microSD זאת בשל גודלה הקטן של האנטנה והרגישות הגבוהה שלה להפרעות, וכן הכרטיס דורש אפליקצייה אשר תרוץ ברקע כדי שתוכלו לנצל את יכולות ה-NFC וכרגע אין כזו לאף מערכת כלשהי. היצרן הציג אמנם דמו באפליקציית Java (וידאו בהמשך) ואמר כי הוא יתמוך במערכות Android אך זה לא יקרה לפחות עד סוף השנה.

Here's an interesting idea from a Chinese company called Netcom (not to be confused with the Norwegian operator): adding NFC capability to existing phones via microSD. That's right, rather than relying on external add-ons that occupy ports, Netcom decided to fit NFC chips plus their antennas onto ordinary microSD cards, yet still managing to cram in up to 8GB of NAND memory at the same time. This sure sounds convenient, but there are some caveats: the first rule is that neither the back cover nor the microSD card holder should be made out of metal; then secondly, we noticed that due to the tiny antenna coil, scanning could become tricky if the reader has a small sensing area -- you'd need to position your phone at just the right spot; and lastly, the phone needs a special background app to communicate with the NFC circuitry.

The demo we saw used a Java app running on a Chinese dumbphone, and we were told that Android will be next in line to receive similar support. Alas, consumers won't be able to pick up one of these cards from the shops, though Netcom's already working with a "top ten" phone manufacturer on a compatible device due in three to six months, so stay tuned. Update: As pointed out by some readers, it turns out that DeviceFidelity beat Netcom to the market last year.

Visa has been working on contactless (a.k.a. NFC) payments for quite some time, and it's now teamed up with DeviceFidelity in the hope of bringing them to even more cellphone users. That company makes (among other things) a contactless payment system contained on a microSD card which, when paired with Visa's own payWave system, will let you use just about any microSD card slot-equipped cellphone to make pay contactless payments at between 50,000 to 60,000 merchants in the US. Exact specifics are otherwise a bit light, but Visa says trials are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year.
