סרטי קולנוע עוברים קיצוץ כדי להתאים לפורמטים נפוצים, או ע"י המפיצים או באופן ידני בתוכנת הצפיה.

אז נכון ש16:9 לא יציג פורמט רחב יותר ללא פסים שחורים, אבל זה מספיק רחב כדי שיהיה אפשר לקצץ כדי להעלים אותם ועדיין לא להפסיד שום דבר חשוב (שלא כמו ב4:3 למשל).
