Hey what do you know... Googling it actually helps!

When we are hungry, our brains will instruct our body to get prepared. In this case, our stomach will be emptied for the incoming food, and any stuff in the digestive system will have to move down through the intestine to the rectum. During the process, the water and gas trapped in the digested material will get squeezed by the intestines, making all sorts of bubbling and gurgling noises. This is the familiar rumbling and growling sound!

Sometimes when certain foods is not well digested (e.g. milk and dairy products), excess gas is formed and thus the rumbling sound is more pronounced and frequent. The rumblings may also occurs after a meal due to the intestine’s increased activity.

Check out this website if you would like to know more about this and other bodily noises.

Did you know…

The technical term of the rumbling sound is Borborygmus. This peculiar word originates from Ancient Greeks, who tried to imitate the funny noises coming from their bellies. Chinese calls this sound “gu-lu-gu-lu”. Which one do you prefer?

By the way, please share with us how this sound is called in your local language! Just add the word and the language in the comment section. Looking forward to a collection of funny sounds!

Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is the making of words that sound like what they describe. Borborygmus is a classic example. Can you think of any other? Here is one! (last paragraph)
